Pastoral Letter

Dear Calvary Brothers and Sisters,

This week is hard. Many of us are sad and grieving, and will likely be in pain for a while. Calvary’s shared values of respect, inclusion, justice, and empathy seem to have lost their place in our society.

Beyond the immediate shock of the moment, there are many in our midst who now feel a deeper level of vulnerability to the harsh changes that may come our way.

As your pastors, we would like to use this moment to remind all of us of our call and ongoing commitment as the Church of Jesus Christ.

As the Church we are called to see and do the work of Christ even when the night is the darkest and the despair haunts us the most. We are called to engage the world, love it deeply, and call for justice- when and where it is needed.

As a part of our ongoing commitment to the work of Christ we must re-commit ourselves to our shared values and remind each other that God loves us. We have covenanted with one another to be there for each other when we feel vulnerable.

This means we must tell our Black brothers and sisters that their lives do matter and we will work to make it so.

This means we must tell our immigrant brothers and sisters, especially our undocumented brothers and sister, that we will love and protect them. We know many of you may be afraid about what might come, but your church is here for you. We will work together so you may know that.

This means that we must say to our LGBTQ brothers and sisters that we will continue to stand with you in your struggle for dignity and human rights. Love is love.

The church must still be the Church. The Church will still be the Church. We will be a place where all of our brothers and sisters, especially our most vulnerable have a sanctuary and a refuge.

We hope to see you all this Sunday as we break Communion bread and dig deep together. We so deeply love you and pray God’s blessings on you.

Pastors Elijah and Erica
